Rocky Mountain National Park

rocky-mountain-np-patchRocky Mountain National Park is part of the Rocky Mountain chain which forms the world’s longest mountain barrier from Mexico to Alaska. Rocky Mountain has 72 named peaks above 12,000 feet elevation. The park has 150 lakes and over 450 miles of streams. There are three distinct ecosystems here: montane ecosystem (below 9,000 feet), the sub alpine ecosystem (9,000 to 11,400 feet), the alpine tundra (above 11,400 feet). We were fortunate to witness the elk breeding season called the elk rut. It was amazing to watch the bull elk battling other males and hear them bugling to the female elk. The Utes, Arapaho, and Cheyenne were the native peoples of this area.
