Great Smoky Mountains National Park

great-smoky-np-patchGreat Smoky Mountains National Park is mostly wilderness and has a very large biological diversity. There are more tree species here than in all of northern Europe. The Cherokees who inhabited these mountains had a word to describe them, shaconage, which means “blue, like smoke.” We did not spend much time here as it was Memorial Day weekend and with no camping reservations (we rarely make reservations anywhere!), we had to move on after only two days. This is a park we plan on coming back to for weeks and exploring.
